Acts 2:41-47

Truth: Who can be a church member? How do you become a church member? What does a church member do? Are you a member of the Lord’s church?

I. WHO CAN BE A CHURCH MEMBER?

  1. Saved people can be church members. Acts 2:37-41
  2. Those who have a testimony. Matt. 3:8
  3. Those who profess Christ as their Saviour. Mat 16:16-18

II. HOW DO YOU BECOME A CHURCH MEMBER?

  1. Join the local church body. Acts 2:41,47
  2. Give your testimony of salvation. Matt 3:8
  3. Be baptized by the church! Acts 2:41. Matt 28:19

III. WHAT DOES A CHURCH MEMBER DO?

  1. Come. Attend church regularly. Acts 2:42, Heb 10:24-25
  2. Connect. Fellowship together. Sunday School, CFT. Acts 2:46
  3. Grow. Study God’s Word. 2 Tim 2:15, 2 Tim 2:2
  4. Serve. 1 Peter 4:10-11
  5. Go. Tell the world Jesus saves. Acts. 1:8

Being A Part Of The Local Church

BEING A PART OF THE LOCAL CHURCH

Matthew 16:13-18

Truth: A testimony is required for church membership. Baptism connects you to the church. The church mission is to make disciples. Are you a member of a local church?

I. A TESTIMONY IS REQUIRED FOR CHURCH MEMBERSHIP

  1. Jesus said a testimony was required before church membership. Matt 16:13-18, Eph 2:20; 1 Peter 2:5-6
  2. John the Baptist required a testimony before baptism. Matt 3:7-8; Rom 10:9-10; Rom 8:16
  3. The early church baptized those that gladly received the word (Had a testimony.) Acts 2:41

II. BAPTISM CONNECTS YOU TO THE CHURCH

  1. Jesus was baptized by John the Baptist. Matt 3:13-17
  2. Jesus chose those baptized by John the Baptist to begin His church. Acts 1:21-22; 1 Cor 12:28
  3. Jesus commanded the church to baptize new disciples. Matt 28:19-20

III. THE MISSION OF THE CHURCH IS TO MAKE DISCIPLES

  1. The church is to get people saved. Matt 28:19
  2. The church is to disciple new converts. Matt 28:20; 2 Tim 2:2; Titus 2:3-8
  3. The church is to serve one another. Eph 4:11-16

THE BLESSINGS OF CHURCH MEMBERSHIP

Hebrews 10:23-25

Truth: Our church gives us a place to worship. Our church gives us a place to serve. The church gives us a place be served. I s your church membership a blessing to you?

I. OUR CHURCH GIVES US A PLACE TO WORSHIP

  1. Sing songs of praise with the saints. Psa 100:1-2; Col 3:16
  2. To testify of and hear testimonies of the goodness of God. Psa 107:2
  3. Pray to God for the many needs. 1 Tim 2:8; Acts 4:31
  4. Hear the preaching and teaching of God’s Word. 2 Tim 3:15-17

II. OUR CHURCH GIVES A PLACE TO SERVE

  1. A place to use our spiritual gifts. 1 Peter 4:10-11
  2. A place to encourage one another in the Lord. Heb 10:25
  3. A place to give our tithes and offerings. Mal. 3:8-10, Matt 23:23

III. OUR CHURCH IS A PLACE TO BE SERVED

  1. A place to give and receive love. Heb 10:24, 1 Peter 1:22; Rom 16:16
  2. A place to study and grow in the Lord. 1 Tim 2:15
  3. A place to receive discipleship. 2 Tim 2:2

IN EVERYTHING GIVE THANKS

Truth: Be thankful to God. Express your thankfulness to God. Be thankful in the tough times. Are you thankful to our God?

I. BE THANKFUL TO GOD

  1. God wants us to have an attitude of gratitude. 1 Thess 5:18, James 1:17, Rom 8:28
  2. God wants us to know He is God. Psa 100:3, Col 3:16, Psa 95:3-5, 1 Thess 5:19-21

II. EXPRESS YOUR THANKFULNESS TO GOD

  1. Thank God for your salvation, church membership, Holy Spirit leadership, the Word of God. Psa 107:1-2, 1 Thess 5:19-21
  2. Thank God by praising Him. Psa 100:1, Psa 95:2
  3. Thank God by serving Him. Psa 100:2-5

III. BE THANKFUL FOR THE TOUGH TIMES

  1. Tough times should cause us to draw closer to God. Psa 95: 7-11, 2 Cor 12:9-10
  2. Tough times should cause our faith to grow. 1 Peter 1:7-8
  3. Tough times can be our greatest witness. Dan 3:16-18, Matt 10:19-20

Why Baptism Is So Important

WHY BAPTISM IS SO IMPORTANT

Matthew 3:13-17

Truth: Jesus instructed the church to baptize. Baptism is a picture of our salvation. Baptism connects believers to the church. Have you been baptized?

I. JESUS COMMANDED THE CHURCH TO BAPTIZE

  1. John the Baptist came baptizing. Matt. 3: 5-8, John 1:6, Matt 3:3
  2. John baptized Jesus. Matt 3:13-17
  3. The twelve Apostles of Jesus were baptized by John. Acts 1:21-23
  4. Jesus commissioned the Apostles to baptized new disciples. Matt. 28:19, I Cor 12:28. Matt 16:17-19

II. BAPTISM IS A PICTURE OF OUR SALVATION

  1. We have died to sin as Christ died for our sin. Gal 2:20
  2. We are risen to a new life in Christ. Rom 6:3-6
  3. We are to follow the Lord in the watery grave of baptism. Matt 20:23

III. BAPTISM CONNECTS BELIEVERS TO THE CHURCH

  1. Baptism identifies believers with Christ and His church. Acts 2:38, Acts 2:41; 8:12; 16:33; 18:8
  2. Baptism is a commanded and privilege. Acts. 2:38

I. REMEMBER THE BAD BEFORE THE GOOD

  1. God revealed your sin to you. Psakm 116:3, Acts 2:37, Acts 9:5.
  2. God revealed the remedy for sin. Psakm 116:4, 1 John 3:5, 2 Cor 5:21
  3. God revealed Himself to you. John 6:44,2 Cor 7:10

II. REMEMBER WHAT YOU DID

  1. Your prayed. Psakm 116:1-2. Rom 10:13
  2. You repented. Psakm 116:4-6, Luke 18:13
  3. You believed (trusted) in Jesus. Psakm 116:10, Rom 10:9-10

III. REMEMBER WHAT HAPPEN

  1. You noticed the burden was gone. Psakm 116:7, Rom 5:1, Matt 11:29, 1 John 4:13. Gal 5:22-23.
  2. You loved the Lord Jesus. Psakm 116:1, Rom 5:5. 1 John 4:19
  3. You loved the church and joined her. 1 John 3:14,16

WHY I AM A CHURCH MEMBER

1 Peter 3:8-17

Truth: To cultivate Christian love. To Practice the Lordship of Christ. To maintain a good conscience. Why are you a church member?

I. TO CULTIVATE CHRISTIAN LOVE

  1. Evidence of love is unity of mind. Vs. 8, Phil 2:1-11
  2. Evidence of love is compassion, pity and being courteous. Rom 12:15. Eph 4:15
  3. Love you enemies. Vs. 9, Matt 5:43-45
  4. Love life. Vs. 10-12, Psa 34:12-17

II. TO PRACTICE THE LORDSHIP OF CHRIST

  1. The fear of the lord conquerors every other fear. Vs. 13-15, Prov 16:7
  2. Let the Lord be the center of your life. Vs. 15, Matt 6:33
  3. Be ready to defend your hope. Vs. 15, 1 Peter 1:8

III. TO MAINTAIN A GOOD CONSCIENCE

  1. We are to work at having a good conscience. Vs. 16, Acts 24:16, Titus 1:15, 1 Tim 4:2, Heb 10:22.
  2. It is better to suffer for well doing than evil. Vs. 17, Psa 118:6, Phil 2:15, Isa 5:20
