OUR GREATEST GIFTS

John 1:10-14

Truth: The world’s greatest gift is Jesus. Our greatest gift is the salvation of Jesus. Our greatest gift to Jesus is our service for Him. What is your greatest gift?

I. THE WORLD’S GREATEST GIFT IS JESUS

  1. Jesus became flesh to save the world. John1:14; Heb 1:3; 1 Tim 1:15; John 1:29
  2. Jesus destroyed the power of sin. 1 Cor 15:55-57
  3. Jesus gave us a way to heaven. 1 Cor 15:20-22

II. OUR GREATEST GIFT IS THE GIFT OF SALVATION

  1. Jesus came to save His own. John1:10-12; Rom 10:8-13
  2. Jesus saves those that receive Him. Vs. 12; Rom 10:14-17
  3. Jesus chose to save those that believe with all their heart.

III. OUR GREATEST GIFT TO JESUS IS OUR SERVICE FOR HIM

  1. Know and show Jesus to the world. Phil 3:9-10; Matt 5:15-16
  2. Go and make disciples. Matt 28:19
  3. Love and serve one another in the church. 1 Peter 1:22; 1 Peter 4:10
  4. Give generously. 2 Cor 9:7

Duty Is Ours, Results Are God’s

DUTY IS OURS, RESULTS ARE GOD’S

Ecclesiastes 12:13-14

Truth: Fear God and God will give us wisdom. Obeying God’s commands releases His power. Preparing for God’s judgment conquers condemnation. Are you doing your duty and seeing God’s results?

I. FEAR GOD AND GOD WILL GIVE US WISDOM

  1. The “fear of the Lord” is that attitude of reverence and awe.
  2. The person who fears the Lord will pay attention to His Word and obey it. Prov 1:7; Job 28:28
  3. A healthy fear of God overcomes unhealthy fears. 1 John 4:18; Matt 10:28
  4. The fear of the Lord let’s us know Jesus has got our back. Rom 8:31

II. OBEYING GOD’S COMMANDS AND HE WILL RELEASE HIS POWER

  1. God’s Word reveals God’s commands. Josh. 1:7-8
  2. Keeping God’s Word brings God’s power into our lives. John 14:15-23
  3. Speaking God’s Word through God’s Spirit brings Godly results. 1 Cor 2:4-5; Heb 4:12; Eph 1:13

II. PREPARE FOR GOD’S JUDGMENT

  1. God will judge every person. Ecc 12:14; Heb 9:27; 2 Cor 5:10
  2. The unsaved will be cast into Hell. Rev 20:11-15
  3. The saved will give an account of the saved lives. Rev 20:12; 1 Cor 3:13-15

God Is Worthy Of Our Thanks

GOD IS WORTHY OF OUR THANKS

1 Thessalonians 5:18, Psalm 100:1-5, Psalm 95 1:11

Truth: Be thankful to God. Express your thankfulness to God. Be thankful in the tough times. Are you thankful to our God?

I. BE THANKFUL TO GOD

  1. God wants us to have an attitude of gratitude. 1 Thess 5:18, James 1:17, Rom 8:28
  2. God wants us to know He is God and we are His people. Psa 100:3; Psa 95:3-5; Psa 37:25; Matt 28:20

II. EXPRESS YOUR THANKFULNESS TO GOD

  1. Thank God for your salvation, your church, the Holy Spirit, the Word of God. Psa 107:1-2
  2. Thank God for all the blessings of life. James 1:17
  3. Thank God by praising Him. Psa 100:1, Psa 95:2
  4. Thank God by serving Him. Psa 100:2-5; 1 Peter 4:10-11

III. BE THANKFUL FOR THE TOUGH TIMES

  1. Tough times should cause us to draw closer to God. Psa 95:7-11, 2 Cor 12:9-10
  2. Tough times should cause our faith to grow. 1 Peter 1:7-8
  3. Tough times can be our greatest witness. Dan 3:16-18, Matt 10:19-20

  2. We look to the promise of Christ’s return. 1 Thess 4:14-15. John 14:1-3

  4. We look to the rapture of the living saints. 1 Thess 4:17
  5. We look to the reunion of Christians with Christ forever. 1 Thess 4:17-18

Truth: On the night before His death on the cross, Jesus prays for himself, the apostles, and future believers. His mission is about to be complete, but He is sending His church on mission in the world.

I. Jesus Prayed for His Glory to Be Revealed At the Cross. (John 17:1-5)

  1. He prays for God’s glory to be displayed at the cross. (John 17:1-2)
  2. He prays through the story of the redemption. (John 17:3-5)

II. Jesus Prayed for the Church to Reveal His Glory in the World. (John 17:6-19) He prayed for the church’s:

  1. Unity (John 17:11)
  2. Protection (John 17:12)
  3. Fullness of joy (John 17:13)
  4. Sanctification (John 17:16-17)
  5. Mission (John 17:18)

III. Jesus Prayed for the Next Generation of Believers to Continue the Work Until Glory. (John 17:20-26)

  1. The church’s unity impacts its witness in the world. (John 17:21)
  2. The church is where the glory of Christ dwells. (John 17:22)
  3. The church is to grow in Christian maturity. (John 17:23)
    1. “A church in love with Jesus will not only see the birth of new converts, but the birth of new churches.”
  4. The church has a glorious future. (John 17:24-25)
  5. The church is to be marked by love. (John 17:26)

FOLLOWING THE LORD TODAY

John 14:15-27

Truth: You must know the Lord’s truth to follow Him. You must love and obey the Lord to follow Him. The Lords Spirit will empower you to follow Him. Are you following the Lord?

I. YOU MUST KNOW THE LORD’S TRUTH TO FOLLOW HIM

  1. The Spirit of truth reveals God’s truth to us. John 14:15-18. John 14:26; John 16:13. 2 Tim 3:16-17; John 15:26
  2. The Holy Spirit and the Word of God will always agree. John 16:13-15. John 4:23-24

II. YOU MUST LOVE AND OBEY THE LORD TO FOLLOW HIM

  1. We love the Lord by doing His will. John 14:21-25. John 14:15; James 4:17
  2. We are to love the Lord with all our being. Matt. 22:37-38
  3. We are to love one another has the Lord loves us. John 13:34-35; 1 John 3:16

III. THE LORDS’ SPIRIT WILL EMPOWER US TO FOLLOW HIM

  1. God’s Spirit lets us know we are His. John 14:27; Rom 8:16
  2. God’s Spirit abides in us. John 14:17, 21, 23. Rev 3:20
  3. God fills us with His Spirit to do His will. Eph 5:18; Acts 4:8; Phil 2:12-13; 1 Cor 15:10; 1 Cor 2:4-5

Truth: Remember the reason for our Lord’s death. We are to Remember He will return for us. Remember to examine ourselves. Let us remember and be thankful for our Lord’s death.

I. REMEMBER THE REASON FOR OUR LORD’S DEATH

  1. The bread represents his body broken for us. 1 Cor 11:23-24, Isa 53:4-5
  2. The cup represents His blood shed for our sins. 1 Cor 11:25, Heb 9:12, 22, Eph 1:7, Col 1:14
  3. The Bread and the cup take us back to the cross. 1 Cor 11:26. Isa 53:6, 1 Peter 2:24, 1 Tim 1:15

II. REMEMBER HE WILL RETURN FOR US

  1. Jesus told His disciples he would return to carry them home with Him. 1 Cor 11:26, Acts1:11, John 14:1-3
  2. He will bring His heavenly saints with Him. 1 Thess. 4:16-18

III. REMEMBER TO EXAMINE OURSELVES

  1. Come to the supper Saved and a member of the Lord’s church. 1 Cor 11:28, 1 Peter 3:15, Acts 2:41
  2. Come to the supper unworthy but forgiven. 1 Cor 11:29-32, 1 John 1:9, Psa 32:5
  3. Come to the supper in unity. 1 Cor 11:33-34, Eph 4:1-3

Truth: To know the truth is to know Jesus. To know the truth is to know the Bible. To know the truth is to know and listen to the Holy Spirit. Do you know the truth?

I. TO KNOW THE TRUTH IS TO KNOW JESUS

  1. Jesus said that He is the truth. John 14:6
  2. The Bible says that grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. John 1:17; John 4:24
  3. Jesus said that His sheep know Him and He knows His sheep and they hear his voice. John 10: 14-16; 2 Tim 1:12; 2 Tim 2:19
  4. We know Jesus and the truth because the Holy Spirit dwells in us. 1 John 4:13

II. TO KNOW THE TRUTH IS TO KNOW THE BIBLE

  1. The Bible came from God and tells us God’s truth. 2 Tim 3:16-17
  2. The Bible is God’s truth revealed for all mankind. Heb 4:12; Matt 4:4; Eph 6:17

III. TO KNOW THE TRUTH IS TO KNOW AND LISTEN TO THE HOLY SPIRIT

  1. The Holy Spirit is the Spirit of truth. John 14:17; 15:26
  2. The Holy Spirit reveals truth to us. John 16:13-15; 1 Cor 2:9-12
  3. The Holy Spirit confirms God’s truth in our hearts. Rom 5:5; Eph 5:9; Gal 5:22-23

  2. We know the Scripture made us wise unto salvation. 2 Tim 3:15; John 5:39
  3. We know the Scripture are inspired and revealed to us by God. 2 Tim 3:16; 2 Peter 1:20-21
  4. We know the Scripture are profitable for doctrine (what is right), for reproof (what is not right), for correction (how to get right), and for instruction in righteousness (how to stay right). 2 Tim 3:16. John 17:17
  5. The Scripture equip us for service. 2 Tim 3:17; 2 Tim 2:21. John 17:17-19.
